Collins/Krawczyk claim Charleston Open doubles title, upsetting No. 1 seeds

Danielle Collins and Desirae Krawczyk did it the hard way – all week long.

The American duo captured the Credit One Charleston Open doubles title on Sunday, shocking No. 1 seeds Giuliana Olmos and Ena Shibahara 0-6 6-4 14-12 in a come-from-behind victory which gave Collins her first-ever WTA title in doubles and an eighth for Krawczyk.

The hard way? The unseeded team won each of their four matches this week in match tiebreaks, while also beating the second seeds in the quarterfinals.

Collins/Krawczyk were playing together for a third time, having made the semifinals at Wimbledon last year. In the final, they fought off two championship points late in the match tiebreak, which they eventually won 14-12.

Olmos/Shibahara had teamed up together for the very first time.

“There was some really difficult moments, and I think when our opponents were playing so well… we had to try to counter that as much as we could,” Collins told reporters after the match.

“But I think because of our camaraderie and being able to rely on each other, it gave both of us a lot of confidence knowing we would hang in there.”
