COCO Celebrates 25 Years in Charleston

25-YEAR CELEBRATION COMES TO OAKS DECK SATURDAY

It seems like just yesterday that Jennifer Capriati was celebrating on the green clay of Daniel Island, a 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 winner over Martina Hingis, her 11th career singles title and a big bouquet of roses in hand. It was 2001, and the Credit One Charleston Open (then known as the Family Circle Cup) had just made the move north from Hilton Head Island to Charleston.

Shelby Rogers was but a wide-eyed ballgirl, all of eight years old but already dreaming pro tennis dreams. Emma Navarro was still a month away from her birth.

We’ve since seen a host of great champions capture trophies at LTP-Daniel Island, everyone from Venus and Serena Williams to Justine Henin, Caroline Wozniacki, Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys. Local favorites Rogers and Navarro have played here, too. On Saturday, the tournament will celebrate a quarter-century in Charleston as one of the WTA’s premier tour stops. (The event was named WTA 500 Tournament of the Year for the third straight year in 2024.)

After the semifinal matches wrap up (5-8 p.m.), the 25-Years in Charleston Party on the Oaks Deck will offer fans an evening of Lowcountry cuisine, drinks and live music from DJ Boogi. Tournament ambassadors and emcees will be in attendance, providing an opportunity to meet the faces of the tournament as it celebrates 25 years of world-class tennis in Charleston.
